These test configurations covered the NE-DC, NG-RAN E-UTRA and NGEN-DC deployments.
Discussion
Test Configuration D covers the case where a E-UTRA eNB is connected to the NR core network. Thus, although the LPP protocol remains unchanged, the NAS messages used as LPP transport mechanism are the 5GC NAS messages instead of the EPC NAS messages used for legacy LTE tests.
Observation 1: Test configuration D relies on 5GC NAS messages.
Thus, the functionality of Test Configuration D cannot be covered completely by the equivalent LTE protocol test. The functionality could be covered by a combination of the LTE test in Chapter 7 and the corresponding 5G test in chapter 9 using Test Configuration B. However, a NG-RAN E-UTRA supporting DUT does not necessarily support NG-RAN NR. Thus, this option would also not ensure all DUTs are properly tested.
Observation 2: Test configuration D cannot be covered by any other already existing test configuration or a combination of them.
Proposal 1: Test configuration D needs to be tested.
Test configuration E faces the same issue: the LTE test cannot covered the test functionality, since the 5GC NAS messages would remain untested.
Observation 3: Test configuration E also relies on 5GC NAS messages.
However, Test Configuration E builds upon Test Configuration D (it adds a NR PSCell in DC). All the message exchange for the test would be done over the LTE PCell, so only the initial attach procedure would be different. The NGEN-DC attach procedure will already be covered in standard protocol tests, so Test Configuration E adds no value on top of Test Configuration D for positioning.
Proposal 2: Test configuration E functionality is covered by Test Configuration D
Please notice that this approach is the same that was followed to justify why Test Configuration A does not need to be explicitly tested.
38.508-1 allows for multiple PDU sessions to be configured in the preamble, and to remain configured throughout the test body.
This is not fully accounted for in either the rest of 38.508-1 or 38.523-1.
2. Discussion
2.1 New requirements for Multi-PDU session design
As default in the preamble of a test case, each PDU session requested by the UE is allocated one DRB, therefore it will never be known during the test body how many PDU sessions, nor how many DRBs have already been allocated.
2.2 The use of DRB2
38.508-1 Table 4.6.1-13 configures SRB2 with DRB1, but there is no procedure which specifies the use of DRB2. The first PDU session established therefore will use DRB1. If the UE only configures one PDU session in the preamble and the test case goes on to configure a voice call, DRB2 will be used to carry the voice call. If, however the UE configures a second PDU session in the preamble, this will use DRB2 and so the voice call configured in the test body must use another DRB.
This results in possible confusion in the test case about which DRB is used for what.
2.3 IMS DRB
As an example, let us consider a UE which is configured to automatically request 2 PDU sessions when it is switched on. One for Internet and the other for IMS. 38.508-1 currently defines the default DRB of the first PDU session to be allocated DRB1 and the default DRB of the second PDU session to be allocated DRB2.
In LTE we have specific PICS: pc_Provide_IMS_as_second_APN and pc_Provide_Internet_as_second_APN to determine the order in which the UE will always configure the APNs.
Question 1: Is it always possible to guarantee the order in 5G? e.g. If we switch the UE on and it requests a PDU session for IMS first, if we then switch it off and on again, will the UE always request the IMS PDU session first (so always use DRB1 for IMS)? Or is it possible that this time the UE may request the IMS PDU session second (so according to 38.508-1, DRB2 will now be used for IMS)?
Question 2: 36.508 currently defines the IMS session to use DRB1 and EPS Bearer Id 5. If the PDU session for IMS is not requested first, the DRB id used in 5G will not be DRB1. This may cause issues for intersystem tests.
3. Proposals
Proposal 1:
Never hard code either the PDU session, or the DRB id, used in any specific message contents in any 38.523-1 test case. Instead, always consider for instance “the DRB id of the first PDU session created in the preamble”, or “the DRB id of the PDU session configured for IMS”.
Proposal 2:
A test case can specify a minimum number of PDU sessions it expects to be configured in the preamble, e.g. at least a PDU session for IMS and a PDU session for Internet, but never a maximum (unless the test case is only applicable e.g. for IoT, in which case no PDU sessions will be configured).
Proposal 3:
Define in 38-508-1 that DRB1 shall always be used for the PDU session configured for IMS. This will align SA Option 2 with what has already been defined for 5G EN-DC.
All other DRBs, both those used for the default DRB of further PDU sessions (such as Internet) and non-default DRBs, should be allocated a value from 2 onwards.
